Crazy Horse Visit

By Kadmiel | Jun 3, 2010

Guest post by Erica Hamlin.

Every time I get a yen to reconnect with my ancestral roots, I head to Custer, SD to the Crazy Horse Memorial. It’s a short drive from Sturgis, SD but I still remember to set my Adt Security Package before I leave.

The drive there is beautiful with the tall, stately pines that sunlight filters through to dapple the ground. Driving around the curves in the road always opens a new vista to view.

Crazy Horse Memorial is so large, Mt. Rushmore could fit in the space between the horses neck and the outstretched arm. Since I have been going up there for nearly forty years, I have seen a great many changes and am really excited about how the great warrior is emerging from the rock of the Black Hills.

You can see Crazy Horse Mountain before you get there, but you definitely want to go into the museum to really get an understanding of both the artist and the people that are represented. I also took the bus tour to the base of the mountain the last time I was there. Just last year I stayed to watch the laser light show that commences after dark. It was really fabulous and set to music, I plan to stay again this year at least once.

Storm adds new Chaos Guatemala

By Kadmiel | May 30, 2010

At least 15 people are reported killed in Guatemala as a powerful tropical storm sweeps across the country, adding to chaos already caused by an erupting volcano.

Rivers have burst their banks and bridges have been destroyed. Around a dozen people are missing. Among the dead are four children whose home was buried in a mudslide.

Tropical storm Agatha is the first of the Pacific hurricane season. It is expected to dump rain across other central American states too.

Guatemala’s main airport has been closed for at least five days after the Pacaya Volcano began erupting last week. The rain is hampering efforts to clear up the ash.

Hundreds of people are in shelters and the storm has forced more to flee their homes.

A state of emergency has been extended across the country

People Flee From Erupting Guatemala Volcano

By Kadmiel | May 30, 2010

May 30, 2010 (Pen Men at Work): The Guatemala volcano Pacaya erupted in a shower of molten rock, lava and debris last Thursday, leaving a person dead and a number of children missing. The other inhabitants of the place have been forced to flee from the location which is a good 30 km from the capital city.

Guatemala City, the nation’s capital was also forced to close down its international airport as the volcanic ash threatened visibility as well as security. The flights were all diverted to the other prominent airports of the country.

The news agency from Associated Press received the news of how a family had to hide under their beds and tables while ash and rocks from the volcano fell all around them. The family from Calderas lamented that they had lost every possession as the watched their house being crumbled by the huge rocks and debris from the volcanic eruption. One man was reported killed when he fell to his death from the fourth floor while sweeping the ashes.

The President of the country had declared an emergency all throughout the regions of Escuintla, Guatemala City as well as the surrounding areas. The people from the badly affected areas are currently being housed in temporary shelters while an additional 1000 residents have also been evacuated from the site of volcanic eruptions.

A TV reporter, Anibal Archila, has also been killed in the catastrophic event. With a number of lives and properties lost, the people of the area fear another eruption of the Pacaya soon even as the present volcanic activity seems to be going down.

This particular volcano is known for its intermittent eruptions with the last one occurring in January 2000.

70 And Getting Younger By The Year

By Kadmiel | May 30, 2010

This is a guest post by Ethel Carson

It is funny, here I am celebrating my 70th birthday with a hike to the top of a mountain despite my hearing loss. I wouldn’t have been caught dead hiking in my 30’s, let alone in my 70’s. When I think back on the journey that has gotten me here I chuckle to myself.

I had just turned 58 and I was feeling every one of my years. My children had recently convinced me that I would be better off living in a senior living facility than by myself. I reluctantly agreed with my children and I decided that I also should probably get hearing aids so I could at least carry on a conversation. So, after living at my new home for a couple of months a new guy moved in named Steve. I thought Steve was at least a few years younger than me but when he told me he was actually 82 my jaw dropped. How can this be I asked Steve? Steve went on to tell me he had found that elusive fountain of youth. Well, what is it I asked? Living life Steve told me. Look Steve said, there are no end of activities available for today’s seniors. It is foolish for us not to take advantage of everything we can and live life to the fullest. So that is what I decided to do with my remaining time. Whether it is a senior computer class, or a senior swimming class, I can be found at it. And since I have decided to live life everyday is a new day and I wake up with more energy than every in my life and I look forward to living life to the fullest
