Storm adds new Chaos Guatemala

By Kadmiel | May 30, 2010

At least 15 people are reported killed in Guatemala as a powerful tropical storm sweeps across the country, adding to chaos already caused by an erupting volcano.

Rivers have burst their banks and bridges have been destroyed. Around a dozen people are missing. Among the dead are four children whose home was buried in a mudslide.

Tropical storm Agatha is the first of the Pacific hurricane season. It is expected to dump rain across other central American states too.

Guatemala’s main airport has been closed for at least five days after the Pacaya Volcano began erupting last week. The rain is hampering efforts to clear up the ash.

Hundreds of people are in shelters and the storm has forced more to flee their homes.

A state of emergency has been extended across the country
